Cartoon Network is an American television channel that launched in 1992. It is owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery. Since 1996.
The channel started off as a reruns channel, airing vintage theatrical and television cartoons that had been acquired by Turner. This included the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies previously owned by Associated Artists Productions (a.a.p.), Tom and Jerry, Droopy, Popeye (also owned by a.a.p.), The Flintstones, Yogi Bear and Scooby-Doo. Anthology series for such cartoons were ToonHeads, The Tex Avery Show, The Bob Clampett Show and The Popeye Show. Early new series include 2 Stupid Dogs, Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron and The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest. During the early years of the channel, TBS and TNT would simulcast Cartoon Network programming for the purpose of increased exposure.
In 1995, Cartoon Network launched the animation showcase series What a Cartoon!, which paved the way for many original series, including Dexter's Laboratory, Cow and Chicken, Johnny Bravo, The Powerpuff Girls and Courage the Cowardly Dog. Later original hit series, some of which were also greenlit from an anthology series, include Ed, Edd n Eddy, Samurai Jack, Codename: Kids Next Door, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Ben 10, Chowder, Transformers: Animated, Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe, We Bare Bears, OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, Craig of the Creek and Infinity Train (before moving to HBO Max with the third season). Cartoon Network has co-produced shows such as Fat Dog Mendoza, The Cramp Twins, the second season of The Big O, Robotboy, Immortal Grand Prix, Skatoony, Storm Hawks, the 2007 remake of George of the Jungle, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Hero: 108, The Amazing World of Gumball and Mixels.
Cartoon Network has also aired numerous acquired series, especially ones based on DC Comics, such as the Justice League series, Teen Titans, Krypto the Superdog, Young Justice, Green Lantern: The Animated Series, DC Nation Shorts, Teen Titans Go! and numerous Batman series. Other acquired series that have aired include Rocky and Bullwinkle, both the 1985 and 2011 versions of ThunderCats, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Pokémon, various Transformers series, Atomic Betty, Totally Spies!, the Total Drama series, Naruto, Bakugan Battle Brawlers, Johnny Test, The Super Hero Squad Show, MAD, Lego Ninjago, Sonic Boom, Peanuts, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Unikitty! and Mega Man: Fully Charged.
Blocks on Cartoon Network include Adult Swim, which is oriented toward older audiences, and Toonami, which focuses on action animation, especially anime.
Among the continuity announcers for Cartoon Network have been Carrot Top, Frank Welker and Will Arnett.
