Mary Katherine Bomba also known as MK, is the main protagonist of the 2013 Blue Sky Studios film Epic. She is the fun, kind, adventurous, resourceful, and loyal 17-year-old daughter of the eccentic scientist Professor Bomba, who is studying a group of little people called the Leafmen, whose main duty is to protect the forest kingdom, located in Danbury, Connecticut, U.S.
Both of them are struggling to understand each other. When MK's dog, Ozzy, rushes into the woods, she discovers one of the Leafmen and shrinks down to their size. It is up to MK to defend the magical land - and her estranged father - from an army of troll-like, decay-spreading monsters known as the Boggans led by Mandrake. She teams up with Nod, the spirited warrior, the gangster-like toad; Mub and Grub, the hilarious slug and snail, the courageous General Ronin, the wise Queen Tara, and the scroll-keeper Nim Galuu. She is Nod's love interest and soon becomes his girlfriend at the end of the film.

Biography[]
For the first few years of her childhood, Mary Katherine shared a home with her parents. Mary Katherine's mother eventually left her father because she had become tired of his fixation with tiny people who she didn't think were real. Until her mother passed away, they lived apart from her father for a while. She made a commitment to Mary Katherine before she passed away to return to her father's home and make an effort to coexist with him.
To live with her estranged father, Mary Katherine moved back into the Bomba residence where she had grown up. Despite being disoriented, he gave her a warm welcome and hurried to reintroduce her to the house and his job, even if she disapproved of his search for "tiny people". She tried to get through to him that he needed to act more normal, but he was too focused on the strange things going on in the forest, so he hurried off and promised to catch up later. M.K. chose to quit after becoming utterly discouraged. She repacked her bag and wrote a note for Bomba before trying to dial a taxi but finding she couldn't get service. Ozzy the dog took off into the woods as she was thinking about this, and she followed after him.
Unknowingly, M.K. stumbled across the Leafmen vs. Boggins combat, arriving just in time to see Queen Tara's meteoric fall. The gravely wounded queen reduced her down to Leafman size, giving her charge of guarding her royal pod filled with the Life of the Forest, while she struggled to comprehend what she was seeing. She was given the duty of bringing it to Nim Galuu, which M.K. wasn't really clear about.
After seeing the queen pass away, Ronin came on the scene and heard M.K. explain Tara's wish. M.K. panicked when she discovered she had just been shrunk and that Ronin return her to normal while he tried to grab the pod away from her. When Mub and Grub intervened, they forbade him from ripping the pod from her since it had wrapped its roots around her as a gesture of confidence. Mub also seized the chance to flirt with her, which only made her condition worse. Although it became clear right away that they would need another bird to transport them all, Ronin managed to get them back and track and load the entire gang onto his hummingbird.
They visit a bird-racing pit to purchase one, but when M.K. fails to demonstrate any talent for flying birds, Ronin accepts assistance from his former pupil Nod, who had left the Leafmen that day. The trip to Nim Galuu is made faster by M.K. riding beside Nod on his sparrow, albeit he startles her with his fancy flying. They must run after Nod's carelessness attracts the attention of a group of boggan patrollers, and he and M.K. end up falling into a hole together. A mouse approaches them there, which M.K. initially finds adorable before realizing it is a threat. She initially believes it to be impossible, but Nod jumps out of the hole with ease and calls for her to follow.
She accidentally knocks herself out after realizing how high she can jump in her diminutive form due to her excessive zeal. Nod tries to shield her from the mouse, but Ronin saves them both. When she awakens, she initially believes she is speaking to her father about the "weird dream" she just had before realizing it was all true. Ronin has altered the seating arrangements so he can keep an eye on M.K. while Nod grabs the slugs as they continue their trek. She questions the general about why he included Nod, and he explains the Leafmen's belief that neither she nor Nod should ever be alone.
The gang eventually arrives at the Nim Galoo tree, where many jinn have gone to look for explanations. Inside, they see Nim's floor performance as well as his blunder while attempting to keep the news of the queen's passing from the crowd. Together, they descend into the Rings of Knowledge to gather knowledge about how to take care of the royal pod after they go to meet him. The Pod must be maintained moist, according to the Slugs, and it must bloom under the light of the full moon at its tallest point, according to a scroll they discovered. Nim attributed termites for information that was also torn off the scroll's base.
After completing their investigation, the group prepared to go when M.K. enquired about the possibility of something in the scrolls aiding Nim in regrowing. He gave her one that displayed a flashback to the first time she met Tara and allowed her to clearly hear the queen's message, informing her that she would be sent back to her home if she stayed with the pod when it blossomed.
M.K. went to speak with Nod because Ronin was busy sending a message to the Leafmen and the slugs had taken over watching the Pod. He invited her along for a brief trip and showed her a deer that was passing by the tree they were riding in. Ronin was unable to stop Mandrake as he stormed the tree, kidnapped the Pod and snails, and fled while they were gone. When M.K. defended him, Ronin said that he had expected her to be the mature one. He then placed Nod under direct orders to remain with the Pod.
When Ronin pointed out that they lacked the Boggan armor necessary for camouflage, M.K. had an idea and took control of Nod's bird to lead the way. Nod had proclaimed that they should infiltrate Boggan land and reclaim it. She intended to break into her home and steal the boggan armor her father had gathered for his research. Although Professor Bomba was sitting in his office and appeared depressed, the Leafmen poked fun of him, calling him a clumsy giant whom they had been deceiving for years. M.K. defended him and informed Nod that she too is a stomper, something Ronin already knew.
She stormed out after Nod made a bad joke, and Bomba was looking at an old family photo when she arrived, assuming M.K. had fled from him. Bomba apologized to her in front of the photo. When M.K. went to call out to him to tell him he was correct about the Leafmen, Ozzy saw her and, to her horror, tried to like his now-tiny master. She ran away, which forced Ronin and Nod to gather their boggan equipment and flee, especially since Bomba noticed them as well. He vacuumed up M.K. with one of his tools, but when he realized it was his daughter, he passed out. M.K. was released when the jar broke, and Ronin urged that they leave right away.
She gave her father a forehead kiss and moved a pin on his map to show him exactly where Moonhaven was before she departed. The group entered Wrathwood while wearing the Boggan armor and making remarks about the unpleasant odor. M.K. and Nod discovered the slugs and the pod when Ronin exposed himself to the boggans as bait. M.K. and Nod held on to the slugs by their eyestalks while they utilized their stickiness to walk across the ceiling to escape. They nearly got away with it, but Mandrake was made aware of their intrusions during a fight with boggans in midair. At what appeared to be the expense of his own life, Ronin intervened to buy them more time as he sent the entire army after them.
On Nod's bird, the human, Leafman, and slugs escaped. When the group got to Moonhaven, they saw Nim there, having just brought the pod to the area where it would bloom. However, as the moon began to illuminate it, Mandrake and his army, riding bats, entered the air above to obstruct the light. They already knew that the pod would become his successor if it bloomed at night. Even if it meant she couldn't stay beside the pod or shrink back to her usual size, M.K. wanted to accompany the leafmen as they flew out to fight the boggans. She understood her father could have something she could utilize when Nim brought up her improbable victory in war.
Inadvertently stealing the hummingbird from Grub, she mounted it and took off in search of her father. She discovered him already traveling in the direction of Moonhaven, and when she noticed the pin on his map, she knew it was her doing. She pushed him toward Moonhaven despite his attempts to have a tender moment with her. As soon as they got there, she tried to convey her idea of using his recordings of bat noises, but she was annoyed by how slowly he was moving in his human shape, so she jumped into his pocket and activated the sounds herself. As she had intended, the ruckus attracts the bats, who then pursue Bomba as she flees through the forest, driving the animals out of the road and clearing the way for the pod to bloom.
Mandrake had been defeated by the time M.K. arrived back in Moonhaven, thanks to Ronin (who had survived), Nod, and the leafmen. A marigold jinn was given power by the Pod while she was abroad, and it also named her the new queen. Nod was prepared to welcome M.K. to the world of the leafmen even if she had missed her chance to become huge again. However, it was later discovered that the new queen shared Queen Tara's abilities and could therefore return M.K. She kissed Nod before getting enchanted and shrinking back to her original size. She was glad to be reunited with her family after becoming lost in the wilderness and being found by her father and Ozzy.
Later, M.K. took over her father's job as his assistant and taught him what she knew about the Leafmen. On one of the monitors, she saw a call, and it was Nod, as usual. Mub interrupted their conversation because he too wanted to speak with M.K. This led to a confrontation between the two admirers, which concluded with Mub biting Nod. This disgusted M.K., who demanded Mub spit Nod out despite the fact that it was obvious she would need to step in physically. She invited her father to go with her and offered her the helmet he had fashioned for her. They all rushed into the woods to see their companions, where Ozzy joined them.
