Development[]
In October 2020, the project was announced as an animated film titled Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again.[4] The plot centers around Larry's son, Nick, who is hesitant to follow in his father's footsteps as nightwatchman.[4] In addition to Nick and Kahmunrah, the movie will also feature other returning characters: Jedediah, Octavius, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt and Sacagawea, with the addition of Joan of Arc.[4] By August 2021, it was announced that the film is two-thirds of the way completed, and that it will debut on Disney+ in 2022.[5] Producer Shawn Levy, who helmed the first three films, said the film would be "its own thing" while also honoring the "legacy" of the original trilogy.[5] In August 2021, the film was delayed to a 2022 release date. In September 2022, Matt Danner revealed he was directing the film; he previously was the creator and showrunner of the Disney animated show Legend of the Three Caballeros (2018).[1]
Animation[]
The animation would be reportedly handled by Atomic Cartoons.[6]
Music[]
By August 29, 2022, John Paesano was set to composer the film, replacing Alan Silvestri from the first three films.[7]
Release[]
The film is expected to be released exclusively on Disney+ on December 9, 2022, after being delayed from a 2021 release.[2][8][9]
Trivia[]
- It is unknown how the tablet of Achmrnraw comes back from England. However, at the end of the previous movie that took place three years later, the British Museum was on a museum tour, which means it could’ve gotten back to London.
- It could be that it is on another museum tour or Dr. McPhee just wanted to buy it back.
- It is also unknown how Larry gets his old job back. Because at the end of the previous movie, he was no longer a night guard.
- This is the first film in the Night at the Museum series to use the Walt Disney Pictures logo instead of the 20th Century Studios logo.
- This is the last Disney feature film to use the 2006 logo, due to the 100th anniversary logo debuting in Strange World and being expected to appear in all upcoming Disney films beginning in 2023.
- This is the last Disney+ Original film to use the 2006 Walt Disney Pictures logo.
- This is the fifth 20th Century Studios film to be distributed by Walt Disney Pictures and marketed under the Disney brand after Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, Cheaper by the Dozen and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.
- Thus, it is the first Night at the Museum film to be released after the Disney purchase.
- The film also marks the first traditionally-animated film to be released under the Walt Disney Pictures label since Winnie the Pooh (2011).
- This is the first film in the Night at the Museum series to be traditionally-animated, as opposed to live-action.
- It is also the second Disney+ Original feature film to be traditionally-animated after Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe.
- Due to Alibaba Pictures co-financing this film, this is the fifth American-produced Disney-distributed film to be a co-production with a Chinese film company after Iron Man 3 (with DMG Entertainment), Born in China (with SMG Group), Ad Astra (with Bona Films Corp.), and Terminator: Dark Fate (with Tencent Pictures).
- While film is technically considered a continuation of the original Night at the Museum trilogy, there are numerous plot discrepancies that rework this film as a soft reboot.
- Larry still works at the museum despite leaving at the end of the third film and being replaced by Tilly.
- Dr. McPhee no longer remembers that the exhibits come to life and is once again dismissive of his job.
- Ahkmenrah is not present at the museum, though he is indirectly referenced.
- The film resets Nick to just about graduating high school.
- Nick's main love interest has changed from a girl named Andrea to a girl named Mia.
- Kamunrah, despite getting sucked away in a portal at the end of the second film, reappears in this as if nothing happened. Ironically, he is defeated in the same manner.
- During the scene where Nick and the gang chase Kahmunrah across the Africa Hall, Kahmunrah slides under a male lion display saying, "Not today, Mufasa", a reference to a character from The Lion King (franchise).
- Unlike most Disney+ Originals that were originally produced by 20th Century Studios, but moved to a Walt Disney Pictures release, this is the first one to instead just list "Disney" as the copyright holder for the film's posters, rather than Disney Enterprises, Inc. or 20th Century Studios, which had been done previously.
- Despite this, the credits for the film still list 20th Century Studios.
