Rio 3 is an upcoming American animated adventure comedy film produced by 20th Century Animation and distributed by 20th Century Studios. It will serve as a proposed sequel to Rio 2, (2014), the third main installment and seventh overall installment in the Rio film series. Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Mann, George Lopez, Jamie Foxx, will.i.am, Tracy Morgan, Rodrigo Santoro, Kristin Chenoweth, Bruno Mars, Rita Moreno, Andy García, and Jake T. Austin will reprise their roles from the previous films with new members including Bill Irwin, Dane Boedigheimer, Kevin Brueck, Aaron Massey, Bobby Jennings, Lucas Cruikshank, Zoe Saldaña, Gabriel Iglesias, Diego Luna, Gael García Bernal, Danny Trejo, Rosie Perez, Anthony Ramos, Ariana Greenblatt, Olga Merediz, Eugenio Derbez, Michael Peña, Stephanie Beatriz, Marc Anthony, Mayan Lopez, Brice Gonzalez, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Additionally, Anthony Gonzalez will voice Tiago replacing Pierce Gagnon, Isabela Merced will also voice Bia replacing Amandla Stenberg, and Rachel Crow will reprise her voice of Carla. It will be the first Rio film not to be produced by Blue Sky Studios, following its closure on April 10, 2021.

Blu is prepared for his travels to all countries of North and South America, and Jewel is also prepared as well for her travels to all countries of Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Africa. More plot coming soon!

- Isabela Merced as Bia, Blu and Jewel's intelligent, younger daughter, the middle child. Amandla Stenberg previously voiced Bia in the second film.
- Keke Palmer as Eva, a keel-billed toucan and Rafael's mate. Bebel Gilberto previously voiced Eva in both first and second films.
- Josh Gad as Felipe, a scarlet macaw and the hostile leader of a tribe who has a rivalry and territorial dispute with the Spix's macaws. Philip Lawrence previously voiced Felipe in the second film.

Production[]
During an interview, Carlos Saldanha conditioned the third film to the success of Rio 2:
- "I have tons of ideas. Once you've connected with the characters, you have so many stories to tell. It's like our family – you can write books about your family. It doesn't take much work. That's the territory I tap into and I know there's plenty more to tell. It all depends on how the schedules shape up. I'm already scheduled to direct other films. If people enjoy this one, maybe we'll think about a third." do.
Another interview from CRI English on Rio 2 impressions and a new film. Though viewers who have seen Rio 2 are anticipating Rio 3 and further sequels, Saldanha said he is working on a new animated film, adapted from a very famous American book. This film was later confirmed to be Ferdinand, released at the end of 2017.
In an interview with Brazilian news site Veja in October 2023, Carlos Saldanha revealed that he is working on an unknown project to make Rio 3 happen. [1] It is possible this could be the spinoff focusing on Nico and Pedro, or another project related to the franchise. On March 2025, Lin-Manuel Miranda officially revealed that Saldanha will work on project to make Rio 3 happen with a plot where Blu goes on vacation in The Americas, and Jewel, Afro-Eurasia.
Rio 3 "Leaks"[]
Although for many years the existence of Rio 3 did not extend beyond some rumors, very recently a good handful of information was obtained regarding the original “cancelled” project, which was supposed to be the third installment of the franchise.
- WARNING: Everything you read in this section will not necessarily be part of what Rio 3 will be, as they may be both early ideas and simple sketches of the film prior to the closing of Blue Sky Studios on April 10, 2021, so it be cannot guaranteed that Disney will use and confirm this information.
Lyubmir Asrov (a former Blue Sky employee), released to the public via his official website several storyboards that were being developed for the cancelled version of Rio 3[2].
In addition to the Rio 3 "leaks", footage from Spies in Disguise (2019) and the film Koati (2021) (This link is in Spanish) was also included.
These leaks would indicate that the movie was originally going to be about Blu replacing a celebrity macaw who's an actor due to a broken leg and after this Nigel would come for revenge and steal Blu's place as he disguises himself as Blu. This plot would also have inconsistencies with the other movies such as Nigel being able to fly despite the doctors telling him he will never be able to fly in Rio 2, his alliance with Marmosets which was over by the end of the first movie and the absence of Gabi.
