General Ronin is the tritagonist of Blue Sky Studios' 8th full-length animated feature film, Epic.

He is the leader of the Leafmen who sought out to battle against the Boggans, lead by his archnemesis Mandrake. He was also the love interest of the late Queen Tara, Nod's caretaker, and a good ally of Mary Katherine "M.K." Bomba.

Personality[]

Ronin is a fierce, disciplined warrior who has difficulty showing his emotions. However, he proved his rare humorous side when he mocked Professor Bomba's manner of speaking, much to Mary Katherine's disapproval, his taunting of the Boggans and ultimately his teasing "tough-love" manner with Nod.

At the end, Ronin becomes more of a fun-loving character and is very friendly now to Mub and Grub.

After the death of Nod's father, Ronin become his mentor and looks out for Nod where-ever he can. Nod realizes that Ronin plays an important part in his life at the end of the movie.

Ronin is a strong minded and a very brave warrior, he will fight and even sacrifice himself to save the world.

Biography[]

He is the strict and serious leader of the Leafmen and prepares for battle against the evil Mandrake and the latter's evil forces. He had to take care of Nod, since Nod's father is a very good friend of his, and died during a Boggan battle. Throughout the film, he is shown to have a crush on Queen Tara and got really sad when she got killed by Dagda. Before Queen Tara dies, she puts the royal pod in Mary Kathrine's possession; That's when Ronin appears with his fallowers to notice what happened to queen Tara; a few seconds after she spirits away, Ronin makes it so Mary Cathrine notices that the royal pod shrunk her, and she starts panicking; After Ronin tells her that he's not sure why Queen Tara did this with her, his only recommendation for her is to come with him to Nim Galuu's tree.

When Ronin finds Nod to inform him that the queen is dead, it's declared that the forest will die if they don't get the pod to Nim Galuu. They see some destruction that Mandrake has done when they briefly stop on the way there; then after it stands out as evidence that all this time, the queen was keeping things in shape; it becomes official to Ronin that if the royal pod doesn't get to Nim Galuu, the forest will die.

In a later scene, it's noticed by more people that the queen is dead; Ronin tries to have Mary Cathrine, and Nod watch the pod so nothing bad happens to or with it, and Nod completely goes off task with that. After Mandrake breaks into Nim Galuu's tree, he possesses the royal pod along with kidnapping Mub and Grub. After Mandrake gets away, Ronin gets mad at Nod for not staying with the pod like he specifically told him to. Nod gives Ronin the idea to steal back the pod in a boggan disguise. After Ronan agrees to that being a nice idea, they find their way to Mandrake's place. After Ronin uses himself to distract the Boggans, it buys Mary Catherine and Nod enough time to rescue Mub, Grub, and the royal pod.

In a later scene when Mandrake tries to reclaim the royal pod, it turns out Ronin wasn't killed earlier when he was attacked to death by boggans, then, he fights off Mandrake slightly with Nod's help while the leafmen take care of Mandrakes bats that were blocking out the moon. A few moments later, the pod blooms, and the mission is accomplished.

Trivia[]

  • Ronin is the first and to date, Colin Farrell's only voice role.
  • His plate armor appears to be quite hardy, being able to take damage from arrows and Mandrake's ranged rotting attacks without Ronin himself being rotted or aged.
  • Ronin is arguably the second non-human character to speak to Mary Katherine. But since his statements were general, he could have simply been speaking to everybody.
  • Ronin says the “f-word” once in the original copy of the film, but the director cut it. He was forbidden from improvising lines for the remainder of the filming process.
